THE FRESH WATER PEARL MUSSEL IS ONE OF THE OLDEST SPECIES IN SWEDISH FAUNA. THE OLDEST DOCUMENTED INDIVIDUAL WAS 270 YEARS OLD. THE MUSSEL IS CRITICALLY ENDANGERED AND WITHOUT CONSERVATIONAL ACTIONS - ITS FUTURE REMAIN UNCERTAIN. 

THE MUSSEL THRIVES IN CLEAN, UNMODIFIED WATERCOURSES, WHERE TROUT OR SALMON IS PRESENT. THE LARVAES OF THE MUSSEL NEED TO PARASITE A HOST-FISH TO COMPLETE ITS REPRODUCTIONAL CYCLE.
