ATLANTIC SALMON
(SALMO SALAR)

THE SALMON IS A FISH SPECIES LIVING BOTH IN SEA AND RIVERS. THE JUVENILES ARE BORN AND SPEND THEIR FIRST YEARS OF LIFE WITHIN RIVER.

AS THEY HAVE UNDERGONE A MORPHOLOGICAL TRANSFORMATION TO SMOLT, THEY START THEIR MIGRATION DOWNSTREAM THE RIVER, OUT TO THEIR FORAGING AREAS AT SEA.

AFTER A COUPLE OF YEARS AT SEA, GROWN IN BOTH LENGTH AND WEIGHT - MATURE SALMON RETURN TO THEIR NATAL RIVER TO REPRODUCE.

THE SALMON IS DEPENDENT ON UNOBSTRUCTED MIGRATION PATHS, AS THE MIGRATION IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TRAIT OF BEHAVIOUR.
